Working offline, and how syncing works
A realm is kept on your device as well as on the server.
On this page
You can write in a basement with no signal. A realm's records are held locally as well as on the server, and changes sync when a connection returns.
Moving around while offline#
The page you have open keeps working without a connection: create, edit and delete as usual. Opening a different page needs a connection, so while you are offline the app keeps you where you are and says so. The Back button can still return to pages you already opened in this tab.
What happens on reconnect#
Queued changes are sent in order. If something you changed was also changed elsewhere in the meantime — on another device, or by another member — what happens next depends on how you made your change.
- Edits saved with the Save button at the bottom of a page are never overwritten without asking. Both versions are kept, and the app shows Save needs attention. Open the page and, wherever both sides changed the same thing, choose Your version or Version in your realm. Anything changed on only one side is kept.
- Every other change — folder order, calendars, map markers — is settled without asking. The app compares the time you made your change with the time the version in your realm last changed, keeps the later of the two, and discards the other. The same goes for a page deleted on another device: a change made after the delete brings the page back, and a delete made after the change stands, leaving the page in Trash.
When what you can see changes#
The copy on your device follows what you may see. When a record is hidden from you — its folder hidden from players, the record made DM-only, your role changed, or you leave the realm — it is removed from your device the next time the app opens or reconnects. Changes you made to it that had not reached the server go with it, because the server would refuse them. Records newly shared with you arrive at the same moment. The app checks at most every 15 minutes, so a change made moments ago can take a later reload to show.
If something looks unsaved#
- Check you are online — the app indicates when it is working offline.
- Leave the tab open for a moment; the queue drains in the background.
- Reload, unless the app shows Not saved on this device, or the bottom of a page shows Draft not protected on this device or Reconnect to save. Local changes normally survive a reload because they are stored on this device, but those messages mean this device cannot store them. If you see one, keep the tab open until you are back online, save any unsaved edits on the page, and wait until the app shows Synced.
- If a record still looks stale, open it on another device to see which copy the server holds.
What waits until a record reaches your realm#
A record you create is on your device at once, but a few actions need the server to have it first. Until it does, they are shown switched off with the reason Available once this is saved to your Realm, and they switch back on by themselves once the record syncs. Online that is usually a moment; offline it is when you reconnect.
- Sharing, publishing or exporting the record.
- Attaching an asset to it, creating its token, or choosing a faction's symbol.
- Refining an encounter with AI, or generating combatants into it.
