Records and relationships

The one design decision that explains most of the others.

  1. What a link carries
  2. What that buys you
  3. What a record's page lets you do

It would be simpler to let you write a document per NPC and be done. DMRealm asks for a little more structure, and the reason shapes everything else.

A document can only be read. A linked record can be found, listed, drawn on a map, placed on a timeline, counted in a collection, rendered as a graph, handed to the AI as context, and checked against permissions. The same sentence, written as a link rather than as prose, does far more work.

Direction
Links run from one record to another. 'Serves' and 'is served by' are the same link read from opposite ends.
Type
What kind of relationship it is — membership, rivalry, residence, ownership.
Strength
How strong the tie is, so a passing acquaintance and a blood oath are not the same edge.
Secrecy
A link can be marked secret, so the connection exists for you and is invisible to players — the twist is a relationship, not just a paragraph.

What that buys you#

  • Opening a city shows the people, factions, and quests attached to it, without you maintaining that list.
  • Renaming a faction updates it everywhere, because there is one faction rather than forty mentions.
  • A wiki page can pull a live list of your coastal settlements instead of one you must remember to update.
  • The AI drafts with your world in view rather than inventing a generic one.

What a record's page lets you do#

Every record's page has a More menu, the three dots beside its name. It lists only what that kind of record can actually do, so a missing choice is one that does not apply there, not one that is broken.

  • Duplicate makes a copy named after the original, in the same folder and with the same content, that starts hidden from players. Its relationships, comments and history stay with the original. A board's Duplicate copies its tokens and links with it and opens the copy. Sites, quests and encounters keep their contents outside the record, so they are not copied this way.
  • Move to folder files the record in your Directory. If you have no folders yet, create one there first.
  • Copy link copies the record's address once your realm has saved it.
  • Version history shows earlier versions of the page and lets you restore one.
  • Delete moves the record to Trash, with Undo. If the page has unsaved changes on this device, you are asked before they are discarded.
  • Generate with AI and Export open that record's tools in the side panel, on pages that have them.
