Build a settlement map

Generate a town from a type and a seed, then shape its streets, quarters, and buildings.

Last reviewed

The settlement editor lays out a town as data — districts, streets, blocks of individual buildings, walls, water — and then forges that layout into a polished map. Everything you draw is an instruction the generator respects, so you can keep regenerating without losing your own work.

  1. Open a location and start a settlement, or open an existing one from its page.
  2. Pick a settlement type — hamlet, town, city, port, fortress, and more — and a seed in the Generate panel. The generator lays out districts, streets, and blocks of buildings.
  3. Paint districts with the District tool to change a quarter's character. The buildings inside regenerate to match it.
  4. Draw streets with the Road tool. Buildings turn to front the street you drew, and the network re-routes around it.
  5. On every type except Camp, the Entropy slider runs from an orderly grid to a tangled organic town and re-derives the layout live as you slide. The Entropy and Density brushes apply the same controls to just part of the town.
  6. Select a building to move or rotate it, Freeze a block to keep it exactly as it is, or Reroll a block for a fresh arrangement. The generator leaves pinned and frozen buildings alone.
  7. Add a wall with the Wall tool, or let Generate fit one around the built area. The wall then steers the streets rather than sitting on top of them: crossing solid stonework is costly, so the network bends to converge on a few openings, and those become the gates. Towers go up along the stretches in between.
  8. Select a single building to change what it is, give it a roof shape, or make it bigger or smaller. Hold Alt while dragging it to resize it on the canvas.
  9. Select a street to give it its own colour, draw it wider or narrower, or change what kind of street it is.
  10. Place wells, statues, market stalls and carts from the Feature palette, and quarter or street names from the same palette once you type the text.
  11. Set the Wall tool to Mark ruined and drag along a wall to break it open. A breach carries no gate or tower and the stretch after it re-spaces — and because a hole in a wall is a way through, streets may route out over the rubble just as they would through a gate.
  12. Use the Layers tab to show, hide, or lock streets, buildings, walls, objects, and labels, then forge the polished map or export the layout as an image.
